BIOKIL. One Shot – moisture resistant wood glue (D3)
BIOKIL. One Shot is a powdered urea/formaldehyde resin glue for general joinery and cabinet work. The glue line is mould resistant and does not stain most timbers.
It is used by simply mixing with water, as the correct amount of hardener is already blended into the powder. Mixed in the proportions specified, it satisfies the requirements of BS EN 204 durability class D3 and BS EN 303-1 A3 Type II adhesive.
Key features
- Moisture resistant – BS EN 204 durability class D3
- One-part powder – hardener already blended in, just mix with water
- Mould resistant glue line
- Does not stain most timbers
Typical applications
- General joinery work
- Cabinet making and furniture
- Laminating veneer to particleboard, cold or hot pressed
- Fixing plastic laminates (e.g. Formica) where resistance to high humidity or damp is required, e.g. bath surrounds
Mixing
- By weight: 2 parts powder to 1 part cold water (recommended for accurate, consistent mixes)
- By volume: 3.5 parts powder to 1 part cold water
- Put half the water in a container (avoid copper, brass and ferrous metals), add the powder stirring rapidly, then add the remaining water and stir until smooth
- Allow to stand so entrapped air can escape – bubbles in a glue line can cause a weak bond
Application
- Surfaces must be clean and dust free; plane or sand timber not more than 48 hours before bonding. Ideal moisture content is 10–14%, with no more than 3% difference between surfaces.
- Apply a thin spread by brush or hand roller to smooth, well fitted joints (both surfaces for hardwood and dense timbers).
- Apply full pressure with clamps or press while the glue film is still moist – within 20 minutes at higher temperatures, 30 minutes at lower temperatures.
- Wash equipment with warm soapy water before the glue sets.
Usable life and cold pressing times
| Temperature | Usable life of mix | Cold pressing time |
|---|---|---|
| 10°C | 9 hours | 18 hours |
| 15°C | 3.5 hours | 8 hours |
| 20°C | 1.5 hours | 3 hours |
Below 10°C up to 2 or 3 days may be needed before the glue sets. Hot pressing (0.6mm veneer to particleboard) ranges from 4.5 minutes at 50°C to 65 seconds at 140°C – see the data sheet for the full table. Season bonded wood for at least one week before turning on a lathe.
