The Biokil 8mm Meshed Membrane is a high-performance waterproof cavity drain membrane with a bonded mesh surface, specifically designed for internal basement waterproofing and damp-proofing applications. Ideal for retaining walls, vaulted soffits, and curved surfaces, this membrane provides a reliable waterproof barrier while offering an excellent key for plastering, rendering, or dot-and-dab dry lining systems.
Manufactured from durable HDPE with a welded mesh finish, the membrane forms part of a Type C waterproofing system compliant with BS8102:2009, allowing moisture to be controlled and safely managed. The bonded mesh is securely welded during manufacturing to prevent separation and ensure long-term performance.
Key Features & Benefits
- High-performance bonded mesh – ideal for plastering and rendering applications
- 8mm cavity drain system – improves moisture management and drainage
- Type C waterproofing compliant – in line with BS8102:2009
- Designed for basements and retaining walls – suitable for below-ground structures
- Perfect for vaulted soffits and curved walls – where dry lining systems may not be practical
- Waterproof, salt inhibiting – protects against moisture and salt contamination
- Root and contaminant resistant – suitable for demanding environments
- Quick installation – minimal surface preparation required
- No drying time – redecoration can begin immediately
- Flexible and durable – easily folds around corners and openings
Typical Applications
- Basement waterproofing systems
- Retaining walls
- Vaulted soffits and curved walls
- Above and below ground waterproofing
- Damp-proofing and tanking systems
- Plastering and rendering applications
How the System Works
The studded membrane creates a cavity between the substrate and the finished surface, allowing moisture to pass behind the membrane and be safely managed through a drainage system.
The bonded mesh surface provides a strong mechanical key, enabling plaster, render, or dry lining systems to be applied directly to the membrane without additional preparation layers. :contentReference[oaicite:0]{index=0}
Installation Overview
- Install with studs facing the wall
- Drill through the centre of each stud
- Fix using Biokil Plaster Plugs (50mm, 60mm, or 70mm)
- For below-ground applications, use plugs with seals
- Fixings should be spaced at 250–300mm centres
- Ensure tight fixing around corners and junctions
- Do not apply to flat soffits below ground without a minimum 10% slope
Surface Preparation
Remove all unsound plaster, render, or screed and ensure surfaces are level before installation. Use a suitable 3:1 sand-cement mix with additive to repair uneven areas and allow repairs to dry thoroughly.
Where mould or fungal contamination is present, treat the surface using a suitable masonry biocide before installation. For above-ground applications, moisture should be addressed at source using a suitable damp proof course such as Biokil BioDry ProCream.
Finishing Options
Plaster Finish: Apply plaster directly to the bonded mesh surface using standard plastering techniques in accordance with BS 5492:1990. A lightweight plaster such as Tarmac Whitewall One Coat Plaster is recommended.
The first coat should fill the studs and cover the mesh to create a scratch finish. Once set, apply a second coat to achieve a final thickness of approximately 15mm.
Dry Lining: Apply bonding plaster dabs with a minimum thickness of 8mm, ensuring at least 50% membrane coverage before fixing plasterboard.
Once dry, surfaces can be decorated immediately using conventional methods such as painting or wallpapering.
Aftercare & Ventilation
The membrane creates a dry and habitable internal environment; however, effective condensation control remains essential, especially in basements and moisture-prone areas.
Mechanical ventilation systems are recommended to maintain airflow and reduce condensation build-up.
