Solvent-Based Chemical Damp-Proof Course for Masonry Walls
BIOKIL BioDry ProSolv is a ready-to-use, solvent-based injection fluid designed to form a chemical damp-proof course in existing masonry walls. It contains poly-oxo aluminium stearate dissolved in an organic solvent, allowing the treatment to penetrate the masonry and control rising damp.
The fluid can be injected under high pressure into brickwork or introduced at lower pressure directly into mortar beds. It is suitable for solid, cavity and thicker masonry walls, with the drilling and injection method adjusted to suit the wall construction.

Preparation
Ensure maximum ventilation throughout the injection process. Remove or protect storage heaters and cover nearby plants, paths, glazing and other surfaces that could be affected by spilled fluid. Wipe up any spills immediately.
Externally, remove porous or damaged plinths and cut back render above the proposed DPC line. Where practical, external ground levels should be reduced to the internal floor level or below.
Internally, remove timber skirtings and take off contaminated plaster to a height of at least 1 metre or 300mm above the highest visible signs of dampness or salt contamination, whichever is higher. Remove timber fixing grounds from affected areas and rake mortar joints to a depth of approximately 10–15mm before brushing away loose dust.
Selecting the DPC Line
The injected DPC should be positioned at least 150mm above external ground level. For solid floors, place it as close as practical to the internal floor level. With suspended timber floors, the DPC should normally be installed below the joists or wall plates.
Where external ground is higher than the internal floor, lower the ground level where possible or install an appropriate tanking system that overlaps the injected DPC.
Drilling and Injection
- Drill 10–14mm diameter holes directly into the mortar bed or at an angle through the brick so that each hole finishes within a mortar joint.
- Space the injection holes no more than 170mm apart.
- For 115mm walls, drill and inject from one side.
- For 225mm walls, inject from both sides or complete the treatment in stages from one side.
- For walls thicker than 225mm, drill and inject in stages, preferably working from both sides.
- Treat each leaf of a cavity wall separately.
- In very damp walls, consider using two rows of injection holes.
- Adjust the injection pressure to the site conditions and continue until the fluid is visible within the mortar beds.
Do not exceed 100 psi when using high-pressure injection. When injecting directly into mortar beds, use a lower pressure of approximately 5–50 psi and ensure the mortar joint is thoroughly saturated.
Stone Walls
For stone masonry, drill and inject through the mortar beds because the stone itself may be too dense to absorb the treatment effectively. Adjust the drilling pattern to accommodate variations in the wall construction and the position of the mortar joints.
Finishing
Seal external injection holes with a strong cement and sand mortar or suitable plastic DPC plugs. Where external render has been cut back, complete the lower edge with a suitable bell-mouth detail and protect the base area between the render and ground level as required.
Allow internal walls to dry for as long as practical before replastering. Use a suitable replastering specification designed for walls affected by rising damp and residual salts.
Coverage
The quantity required will depend on the type, condition and thickness of the masonry. As a general guide, allow approximately 2.5 litres for each linear metre of a 230mm-thick wall.

Drying, Replastering and Decoration
A solvent odour may remain noticeable for approximately 2–3 weeks after injection and may occasionally persist for longer. Maintain good airflow around treated and replastered walls to support ventilation and drying.
Decorative finishes applied during the first 9–12 months after replastering should be considered temporary. Use a non-vinyl emulsion during this period and avoid vinyl paints and woodchip wallpaper while the wall continues to dry.
Storage and Safety
BioDry ProSolv is flammable and has a flash point of 40°C. Store the container in a cool, well-ventilated location away from flames, sparks, heat and other ignition sources.
Ensure maximum ventilation during injection and be aware that vapour may remain after application. Injection mist may irritate the eyes. Always read the current product label, technical data sheet and safety data sheet before use.
