BIOKIL. Bower Beams – galvanised steel joist-end replacement
The Bower Beam method makes joist-end replacement quick and simple: cut the decayed joist end back to sound timber, treat it with preservative, then fix a Bower Beam to the joist and into the existing wall socket. The joist stays as strong as before and is held clear of the damp wall.
Key benefits
- No new wall pockets or joist hangers – uses the existing joist pocket
- Replace joist ends one at a time without supporting the whole floor
- Fits joists 50–152mm (2–6") wide; all fixings included
- 2mm KHR steel with a supergalv finish for durability in damp conditions
- Compact – easy to handle in confined sub-floor spaces
Sizes
- 6" (BM6) – for joists cut back up to 150mm; 4 pilot holes per joist end
- 9" (BM9) – for joists cut back up to 230mm; 6 pilot holes per joist end
- 17" (BM17) – for joists cut back up to 430mm; 10 pilot holes per joist end
Fitting in brief
- Support the floor if replacing more than one joist end at a time, and cut back to sound timber.
- Clean and level the joist pocket, wire-brush the cut end and treat with preservative (e.g. Ecobor 20).
- Place the two "L" sections either side of the joist, sliding the ends at least 100mm into the pocket, and locate with the galvanised pins.
- Drill 5mm pilot holes 30mm deep through the large holes and fix with the galvanised coach screws (14mm spanner).
