BIOKIL BioFlex Adhesive

Rapid-Setting Adhesive for Bio.Flex Waterproof Membrane

BIOKIL BioFlex Adhesive is a high-performance, cement-based powder adhesive formulated for bonding Bio.Flex Membrane to internal masonry surfaces. Its blend of selected cements, graded aggregates, synthetic resins and fast-acting accelerators provides excellent workability and rapid bond development.

Designed for internal damp-proofing and waterproofing systems, the adhesive can be applied to suitably prepared damp substrates. Once installed, the Bio.Flex Membrane can be plastered over after approximately 24 hours, making the system ideal for refurbishment projects where time or available wall space is limited.

Key Features & Benefits

  • Rapid-setting cement-based membrane adhesive
  • Specially formulated for use with Bio.Flex Membrane
  • Develops high bond strength after approximately three hours
  • Allows the installed membrane to be plastered after 24 hours
  • Can be applied to damp but non-saturated substrates
  • Forms a smooth, workable and easily applied paste
  • Provides strong adhesion to correctly prepared masonry
  • Suitable for thin-profile internal membrane systems
  • Helps isolate new plaster finishes from residual damp and salts
  • Supplied as a 20 kg powder adhesive

Typical Applications

  • Bonding Bio.Flex Membrane to internal masonry walls
  • Internal damp-proofing and waterproofing systems
  • Walls treated with a chemical damp-proof course
  • Walls affected by residual salts or slow-drying damp patches
  • Refurbishment projects requiring a thin-profile membrane
  • Space-restricted areas where wall build-up must be minimised
  • Surfaces that will receive a plaster finish over the membrane

Surface Preparation

Identify and rectify the source of moisture before installing the membrane system. Where rising damp is present, an appropriate remedial damp-proof course, such as BIOKIL BioDry ProCream, should be installed before proceeding.

The receiving surface must be stable, sound and free from paint, oil, grease, laitance, dust and loose material. Repair cracks, voids and other structural defects before applying the adhesive. Contamination and weak surface material may be removed by wire brushing or suitable mechanical preparation.

BioFlex Adhesive can be applied to damp substrates, but the surface must not be saturated. Do not apply over standing water or active water leaks.

Mixing

  1. Place the required quantity of clean water into a clean mixing vessel.
  2. Add approximately 2.3–2.5 litres of water for every 10 kg of adhesive powder.
  3. Mix continuously using a mechanical paddle mixer.
  4. Continue mixing until a smooth, consistent and lump-free paste is formed.
  5. Use the mixed adhesive within approximately 15–20 minutes.

A full 20 kg bag requires approximately 4.6–5 litres of clean water. Only mix as much adhesive as can be applied within its working time.

Application

  1. Measure and cut the Bio.Flex Membrane to the required dimensions.
  2. Position the membrane so that it finishes approximately 25 mm above floor level.
  3. Spread the mixed adhesive over the prepared wall using a 4–5 mm notched trowel.
  4. Apply the adhesive at a recommended finished thickness of approximately 1–2 mm.
  5. Place the membrane onto the adhesive-coated wall within 10 minutes.
  6. Press the membrane firmly into place using a flat trowel.
  7. Work from the centre outwards to remove air pockets and achieve complete adhesion.
  8. Allow the adhesive and membrane to cure for at least 24 hours before plastering.

Once cured, apply a suitable undercoat plaster, which may be gypsum-based, followed by Limelite High Impact Plaster or an equivalent durable finishing plaster.

Coverage

Approximate consumption is 5 kg per square metre, depending on the profile, texture and condition of the receiving surface. A 20 kg bag will therefore cover approximately 4 m² under typical conditions.
